1408

1408 Independent Film Review CoverIf you like Stephen King, you’ll like this. Personally I got bored with a lot of King books and adaptations and 1408 was no different. I’ve always enjoyed John Cusak but in 1408 he seemed to be completely OTT. Maybe not his fault because that’s what the script called for.

1408 is a hotel room number, cursed, haunted and the ideal place to send a cynical writer of ghostly stuff. Expect lots of special effects, in my opinion already done to death in previous King type outings; and a standard twist. Read more

Mr Brooks

Mr Brooks Independent Film Review CoverSlight hesitation when I realized the main character was played by Kevin Costner because most of his stuff of late has been pretty limp and insipid.

Not so Mr Brooks. You don’t want to give too much away when you review a film because it always takes away any surprise elements for the viewer, but let’s just say this is Costner in a role not seen before… Read more

Evening

Evening Independent Film Review CoverA terrific line up, Vanessa Redgrave, Toni Collette, Clair Danes, Natasha Richardson and Patrick Wilson. You’ll note all main characters are female but that’s not to indicate a feminist film.

It’s the emotional tale of a dying woman, played by Redgrave going back over a failed love affair some 50 years prior as conveyed to her daughters. Read more

Fracture

Fracture Independent Film Review Cover If you look close enough, you’ll find everyone has a weak spot. I am a huge Anthony Hopkins fan and have been ever since Silence of the lambs, one of my top 20 movies of all time. His role in fracture is similar to that which he plays all too often yet never seems to get old. Fracture is a very clever movie with some tantalizing twists, There is nothing better than having a movie do a 360 on you, then again, then again. Fracture does this perfectly with a fine balance of great acting, superb character development and great mind games that the viewer can really get into.

Gosling does an equally good job playing the DEA all star prosecutor, my only small peeve is the unnecessary romance subplot, completely detracts from the head-to-head whit fest that is completely entertaining and a joy to watch…. Read more

The Invisible

The Invisible Movie review coverA good film with one of the most superbly crafted soundtracks that I have heard in ages. An Occult Thriller that is well made with few tricks and where the story is told simply and well, focusing on the characters rather than gimmicks.

Popular, middle class high student (Justin Chatwin) is beaten and left for dead by a gang led by project girl (Margarita Levieva) who mistakenly believes he informed on her recent jewelery store robbery…. Read more
