Michael Clayton
I was in the mood to see if Hollywood was still putting out something interesting as far as law thrillers went. To my surprise, they didn’t do too bad keeping things fresh. This movie stars George Clooney (I don’t think I have to tell you any of his previous movies), Tilda Swinton (Chronicles of Narnia), and Tom Wilkinson (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). Clayton (Clooney) plays a fixer; a person who understands the law and in a clinch can bring on the perfect lawyer for any case for his firms clientele.
Unfortunately for him his personal life needs fixing as well. To make matters worse, one of his firms long lasting cases just suffered from one of the attorneys (Wilkinson) breakdown. Through the course of this movie, Michael is forced to not only try to keep Wilkinson together, but keep defense attorney Karen Crowder (Swinton) from gaining the upper hand, and saving his own personal life from going down in flames. Everything’s Gone Green
“Everything’s Gone Green” is a 2007 independent Canadian film by Douglas Coupland. I must say that visually, he used his landscape well. The settings of this film were done nicely, however the writing was way off.
Our story starts off with our main character Ryan (Paulo Costanzo, “40 Days and 40 Nights”) who in the span of one day loses his girlfriend, his apartment, his job, and the chance at a lucky lottery ticket. When calling in the ticket he finds out it is the wrong numbers but the right time for his call. He gets a job doing stories for a lottery winner newspaper and it is from here that he meets his new life, there are many choices that he must make that begin to make him question his morals, and the morals of the people around him. Hostel 2
I swallowed my pride. I gave Eli Roth a second chance. I even took the initiative to embrace this genre of filming. And at the end of it all I came out of this film with an appreciation for the Hostel series. I am not a fan of this genre due to most of these types of films relying on shock value to entertain the viewer.
The “Saw” movies after the first were a letdown to me, as well as “Touristas” being as dry and unoriginal as a remake of “The Hitcher”. My major issues with the first in the “Hostel” series were that I had no feelings towards any of the characters, the plot line moved way to slow, and the scenery was just not up to par with Eli’s previous film “Cabin Fever”. With all that going wrong I almost wrote off the sequel altogether. Lucky for me I did not. Read more
30 Days of Night
Well it looks like my calls for a good thriller has been answered. I just finished watching “30 Days of Night” and I have to say that Hollywood has not lost its touch totally. This is also one of the few movies that actually held true to its hype which in today’s world is a very hard process to achieve.
Great setting, good cast of characters, and a well translated from graphic novel onto cinema writing. For those of you who don’t know, this movie is based on the graphic novel created by Steve Niles. Although the setting is different in the comic series, the story translates even better onto screen…. Read more
