Premonition
Premonition, a housewife Linda Hanson, played by Sandra Bullock is cursed by visions of the future. The movie starts off a little slow, then all of a sudden, starts getting a little ahead of itself too soon. All of this bouncing around continues and was only made worse by filler scenes and plot twists that seemed to bog the movie down.
The movie tried to grasp the philosophical reason as to why this all was happening. Linda talks to a priest but there is no indication of her religion prior to or after that scene. A lot of this plot just happened for seemingly no reason at all. There were a lot of filler scenes I found to be completely irrelevant to the movie. *Spoilers follow*…… Read more
Zombie Honeymoon
After reading my “worst movie of all time” review of Wild Seven, Tom would like to share his worst movie of all time:
Grandmother used to say that if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all, dearie–but she also believed my face my get stuck like that and in the healing power of crystals, so I’m going to say some un-nice things about Zombie Honeymoon (2004). Sorry, grandma. Don’t turn in your grave or leave it and make me shoot you in the brainpan… Read more
Little Children
Little children is one of those films that stay with you months after you’ve seen it. It has no pretensions, nothing is glossed over, just a hard, in your face drama about love, perversions and growing up. Each of the characters has a pretty strong role to play and each does it admirably.
I found myself riveted on the screen and nothing could distract me as the story and character development unfolded. Like any film review you don’t want to take anything away from the person yet to see it but I can say it’s one hell of a climax… Read more
The Riddle
An enigma inside a conundrum. The Riddle is a multi layered film intertwining dual periods in time and a story within a story. The transitions between the Dickension London and that of today, nicely integrating the politics and corruption of the relevant times. The camera work achieves the period distinctions with smart use of filters, and there’s some clever costume moves.
A journalist investigates a series of murders that follows the discovery of an unpublished novel by Charles Dickens in the cellar of an old Thames pub. Gradually he becomes obsessed with unraveling a century-old murder in the pages of the manuscript. Only when he has done so, with the help of a mysterious beach-combing tramp who stalks the Thames foreshore, is he able to solve the modern murders
1408
If you like Stephen King, you’ll like this. Personally I got bored with a lot of King books and adaptations and 1408 was no different. I’ve always enjoyed John Cusak but in 1408 he seemed to be completely OTT. Maybe not his fault because that’s what the script called for.
1408 is a hotel room number, cursed, haunted and the ideal place to send a cynical writer of ghostly stuff. Expect lots of special effects, in my opinion already done to death in previous King type outings; and a standard twist. Read more
Mr Brooks
Slight hesitation when I realized the main character was played by Kevin Costner because most of his stuff of late has been pretty limp and insipid.
Not so Mr Brooks. You don’t want to give too much away when you review a film because it always takes away any surprise elements for the viewer, but let’s just say this is Costner in a role not seen before… Read more
