What makes this film so hilarious is its protagonist, Buddy Flavinoid, who’s roving eyebrows, wild eyes and murderous rage are unmistakably unique. He reminds me of Ren from Ren and Stimpy, with his stress and paranoia spilling over into all sorts of physical comedy. The film is also interesting in that it’s a film about a film that never gets made (in an odd way, this would make it akin to cult classic American Movie).

In Attack of the Slime People (directed by Martin King) Buddy Flavanoid is a washed up Hollywood director trying to make his big comeback and cement his place in history as one of the greats. He sets out to make a monster movie about slime people but ends up himself becoming a monster of sorts, murdering (with a baseball bat of all things) anyone who threatens to get in the way of his “uncompromising vision.” There are some bizarre twists and wild gross out moments which I don’t want to ruin by disclosing too much here.

For a low budget movie, this is a fully-realized work of art, with great writing, directing, acting, look and style. It’s at once timeless and modern. All I can say is: find and see this one-of-a-kind comedy that both satirizes a genre and turns it completely on its head! A future cult classic in the making!

I love Kal Penn who plays Kumar (if you haven’t seen Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle you may know him from the award winning t.v. series House). John Cho who plays Harold also brings his A game. These two team up to bring you a unique plot line with a series of very strange scenes, including unicorns, whorehouses and Dookie Houser? I spent half the movie jaw dropped thinking “wait wtf” and the other half laughing. One of my favorite bits has to be the cyclops but you’ll have see that for yourself.

The pot smoking duo start out on a mission to Amsterdam in search of Harold’s lady love. Soon into their travels things go astray and they find themselves tangoing with a gun ho U.S Homeland Security officer. Secretary Fox (Rob Corddry) deems them a threat to national security and sentences them to be locked up in Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay prison.

The entire film pokes fun at the overbearing discretion utilized by Homeland Security. President bush (no not the real one) even makes an appearance! This movie is great for evening conversation, its not the best ever but its worth watching so I give it a 6.9/10!

Finally, a romantic comedy that wasn’t wrote, directed and produced specifically for 13 year old girls. Dane Cook and Jessica (oh dear lord) Alba star in this unrealistic boob fest.

The plot revolves around a Charlie, a dentist who was cursed as a child to never find love. Each time he sleeps with a woman she becomes destined to find the man of her dreams and get married. This leads to lots of very interesting sexual encounters….

Everything in this movie is very tounge in cheek. Expect to see:

Lots of boobs

Lots of vulgarities

Lots of childish humor

Drug use

Steamy sex scenes

Jessica Alba trying to act

Dane Cooks body

Yes, thats right, Dane spends most of his time on camera nude, or semi nude while the most we see of Alba is a brief penguin panty shot! So dissapointing…

A lot of the humor in Good Luck Chuck falls flat on its face, similar to Cook’s stand up performances as of late. The supporting actor playing Charlie’s best friend (Dan Fogler) is quiet possibly the most obnoxious person I have ever seen in a movie. He delivers a great performance and really suits the characters role, I just find him incredibly irritating the entire movie.

I’d like to see more of this style of movie in this genre, preferably with better actors and dialog. Good Luck Chuck did an ok job and hopefully paved the way for some more adult themed romantic comedies. I’ll give it a 6/10.

John Dahl’s latest crime / comedy produced by the IFC is a big hit with us. What a fantastic lineup: Ben Kingsley, Téa Leoni, Luke Wilson, Dennis Farina… The list is endless. The producers really hit the nail on the head with this cast, absolutely tremendous.

The plot is simple, an alcoholic hit man (Kingsley) botches a job due to his alcoholism, Is sent to San Fran to clean up his act and get into a program. Even telling some co-workers about the premise of the movie cracked a laugh. Its a very whitey movie, sometimes a little slow but definitely worth a watch….

One thing that did grab my attention was Lenoi’s role, I felt it was almost identical to the role she played in Fun with Dick and Jane, I really think they should have thought of that whilst casting, but she did a great job none the less.

Luke Wilson played a fabulous AA sponsor, Hes really grown on me over the years (check out Idiocracy) and brings much more to the table than his more One dimensional brother, Owen. (Except Behind Enemy Lines but that doesn’t count because it bombed.)

Dennis Farina played an outstanding role as the Irish mafia leader, He’s one of my favorite badguys of all time, You Kill Me is definitely one of his best roles, all be it a little small. Overall, the acting in this Indy film was very good, the casting was perfect, the plot with intertwining stories worked very well and it made me laugh out loud on several occasions.

Well worth the watch, check IFC for times. I’ll give You Kill Me a 7.5/10

Wow – this feel-good Indy film that for me, has delivered more than every movie of its genre to date this year. Grab some popcorn and get comfy because this is going to be a long review.

When asked to check out this new independent film, obviously we jumped at the chance, a free DVD screener, who wouldn’t? We were incredibly anxious for its delivery via fed-ex so, whilst waiting eagerly on the front porch for its arrival, we did a little research. (thank you Wi-Fi!)

So it seems the people behind the new movie “Outsourced” are very ballsey. If you didn’t already know, they opted to distribute the movie themselves, via there website and select theaters. I love this attitude and fighting spirit, future Indy film producers, take note.

Now, onto the review.

From the opening sequence you can tell that this movie means business. Some stunning cinematography and gorgeous shots of downtown Seattle accompanied by a pretty stellar soundtrack, This movie takes no time at all getting started. We’re introduced to Josh Hamilton playing Todd Anderson. A customer service/sales manager. This guy is great, I don’t know why we haven’t seen a lot more of him. He’s done some notable TV but I think once his performance in this movie gets picked up, he will be in a lot more demand.

The plot quickly unfolds and leads Todd on a trip half way around the world to train at a new Indian call center. Pretty basic stuff, right to the point, no time wasted. Just how I like my movies.

The lead actress, Ayesha Dharker playing Asha, an Indian call center employee, looks absolutely stunning on camera, there is something about her smile, it just lights up the screen. The casting for this movie, in a nutshell, is perfect. The characters being played are so believable, charismatic and charming, there chemistry is intoxicating. This is one of those films where it just all comes together perfectly and is a real pleasure to watch.

Now, the topic of this movie is one I feel very strongly about – Outsourcing work overseas. You can read and discuss more on this over in the forums. I think the movie did a amazing job in bringing these two completely different cultures together, without potentially angering people due to the nature of the subject and the history between the two. To me, it was an honest, humorous look at what is actually happening in the world, completely balanced in its opinions, never going to far. Two very big thumbs up, nicely done.

The romance is just simply adorable. It’s very rare I seen a movie where the characters just look and feel so good together. The Humor, although a little over the top at times, was of the laugh out loud caliber.

Something else I really enjoyed was the subtle lessons in middle eastern religion and beliefs. Not often a movie teaches you new things, especially when presented in a humorous way. Looking back, I now know more about India than I think I ever did, some of its heritage, religion and its customs. Genius!

I don’t think I will say this again in the next six months, but – go and buy this movie. If your lucky enough to have it show in your city – go and see this movie. If you cannot get out, nor afford a copy for yourself, spread the word. digg/stumble this review, visit there website, tell your friends… The more we support our independent film producers, the more of these quality films they can give us.

Such a charming, delightful – will watch again soon – 9/10.

Hugh Grant effortlessly brought sexy back in this one of a kind laugh riot! This movie will give you something to joke about at the water cooler for days!

The 80’s pop band the entire film is based around was so ingeniously crafted that you almost remember it like you were there (in a good way, I promise).

Drew Barrymore co-stars with Grant in such a superb match up that you find yourself engulfed in their story. I was briefly saddened at times by mistakes made be either character and then lifted high by the gravity of gestures made to redeem them. Barrymore brings her usual girl next door with just a smidge of crazy to make it interesting…..

Brad Garret (known best for being Raymond’s over-sized brother on “Everybody Loves Raymond”) also makes a few well placed appearances. I find his acting refreshing and hope to see more if him on the big screen.

This film is believable and full of light hearted hilarity! Have your pop corn ready because from the moment the intro starts you don’t want to miss a beat. I enjoyed this film on so many levels I can recommend it to anyone with a strong 8.5/10

After reading my “worst movie of all time” review of Wild Seven, Tom would like to share his worst movie of all time:

Grandmother used to say that if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all, dearie–but she also believed my face my get stuck like that and in the healing power of crystals, so I’m going to say some un-nice things about Zombie Honeymoon (2004). Sorry, grandma. Don’t turn in your grave or leave it and make me shoot you in the brainpan…

The film’s story is one similar to Dead Alive’s of helping and hiding undead loved ones but without the brilliance of Peter Jackson directing, writing pratfalls, or being generally humorous and gory. Premise of Zombie Honeymoon being, husband dies on honeymoon because some dead guy, maybe a zombie (how? it’s unexplained) walks up from the ocean and pukes some kinda black unctuous fluid (what? also unexplained) into hubby’s mouth (why? again unexplained) killing him but also providing apparently the source of his renewed life as a flesh-hungry, slowly rotting zombie (yes, the characters do use the z-word despite violating genre conventions). Wife witnesses husband eating a guy and is understandably appalled. Then she’s not. Then she thinks continuing with their irrational plans earlier in the film of moving to Portugal (you’ve got me, probably based on director’s “true story,” addressed below) might make things better (wtf’s are appropriate here). In the end, undead hubby is about to eat wifey or maybe spit the de- and re-vivifying black stuff into her mouth when instead he projectile phlegms it across the kitchen, saving her life and leaving us wondering what the black stuff could be and why it was going to be vomited then and there. Regaining the power of speech suddenly for these last words which I feel better if he also speaking as a proxy for the director, husband says, “I’m sorry.” Thus endeth the movie.

The acting is less believable than the plot.

Apparently this is based on a true story of writer/director David Gebroe’s sister’s fiancé dying. Yeah? If you ever hear this caveat in a writers’ workshop, do like Mission to Burma and reach for your revolver. Headshots should kill the conversation. Point being, true stories don’t make it a good story. True stories adapted to bad romantic zombie films also make for bad film. Maybe my grandmother’s saying holds true with a few minor substitutions: If you can’t make a decent zombie film, don’t make one at all.

In a scale of one to a hundred, I give this negative 83 minutes of my life.

So I’m guessing this would be around a 2/10

Seth Rogen is really making a name for himself and quickly becoming one of the most sought after young males in Hollywood. He’s taken the huge step of supporting roles (The 40yr old virgin) to lead extremely well. Knocked up is an excellent coming of age movie.

There are so many things I liked about Knocked Up, I’m not even going to list what I didn’t. Seth is heavily relied upon to produce most of the laughs in this film and he handles it well. His character is lovable and incredibly charismatic. He has excellent on screen chemistry with Katherine Heigl, their developing story line is captivating and incredibly entertaining….

The supporting cast all play an important role, Jonah Hill is becoming one of my favorite “Teen funny guys” after his roles in Accepted, Knocked up and the more recent Superbad.

Overall this movie delivers everything it sets out too, romance, humor, drama and scenarios a lot of us can relate too. I give Knocked up a rock solid 8.5/10

Well, Shia LaBeouf has been busy this year, first a leading role in one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, Transformers, Now a lead role in the very well presented Horror/Thriller Disturbia.

Before I begin this review I must say, I really hope Shia doesn’t become stagnant playing a similar role in all his upcoming movies. Although he plays his part incredibly well, I fear he may become branded as a one dimensional actor, this kid is talented, give him some more challenging roles!

Onto the movie, After the loss of his fater in a fatal car accident, Kale becomes withdrawn and distant. After a fight with a teacher at school, he gets into some serious trouble resulting in home arrest. Once his privileges are taken away he turns his attention to the outside world and becomes fascinated with his new neighbour Sarah Roemer playing Ashley.

Now, why cant the directors realize Shia’s talent and give him a decent lead female? It seems every movie he’s in, they give him some blond bimbo who cant act to save her life. Very disappointing.

I like the aspect of voyeurism in this movie, Its a nice change from the usual hack and slash thrillers we’re all so accustomed too, Your watching the bad guys through a video camera or peeking through a closed blind, the camera shots are great and suspense scenes make you believe you’re there.

As the movie unfolds, Kale watches a story on the news involving a kidnapping, after further investigation and spying, it becomes clear “whodunit”. Needless to say, it was one of his neighbors he’d been watching.

I really enjoyed this movie, Mostly because I enjoy watching Shia. The movies simplicity and decent script helped keep my attention throughout, if there was a better leading lady and less clichés (dark stormy nights, blood splatters) It would have been a tad better. A not too shabby 7.5/10

Prepare your sea legs as we set sail on another swashbuckling adventure! The Season for 3’s! POTC’s third and final installment in a wonderful trilogy. The biggest letdown for me of this movie is the lack of Jack Sparrow! I’d have liked to have seen him a lot more in this movie, instead, the movie gets to big, looses focus and gets overly complicated. This is why the first of the three is still my favorite.

Despite its overly ambitious plot, POTC: at world’s end still makes you hunger for more. Hans Zimmer has shown yet again how amazing a theatrical score can be. This trilogy’s soundtrack is the only one I actually own on CD and worth every penny.

Bloom and Knightly give there usual high class performances, there on screen chemistry hasn’t dwindled the past four years, in fact, it seemed to be getting stronger and more believable, as was Depp’s immensely humors “Jack Sparrow” character. I don’t think anyone can get bored of him, he has defined a truly amazing character that will live on for many years to come.

The action is fast, The romance believable, The story concluded. POTC 3 at worlds end lived up to its hype and was worth every cent of an $8 entrance fee. A hearty 7.5/10
